Mud Run Birthdays and Obstacle Race Parties

This past weekend I accomplished two major events – creating a memorable birthday party for my 9 year old daughter, and designing my own obstacle course.

Now you may be wondering what these two things have in common.  Well, our daughter has caught the OCR bug along with her parents.  And this year she requested an Obstacle Race birthday party!

You have to imagine how ecstatic I was to oblige her request.  I was happy that this would be unique and not the same old princess birthday party.  This was also going to give us the opportunity to introduce other parents and children to our love of obstacle racing.

I won’t go into a lot of details here, as I want to have a separate post dedicated to the step by step process we took to planning out the course, buying the supplies and building the course.

I will say that we opted not to do any mud obstacles.  After the race we were planning on swimming in the pool, so to avoid mud in the pool we opted for only water obstacles.  I think the other parents secretly let out a sigh of relief when they found out there would be no mud.

There were a total of 12 obstacles that the kids had to get through before they were awarded their finisher medals.  They included over/unders, a large slide, tires, army crawls, cargo net crawl, hurdles, a dark crawl through, an ice bath, balance beams and a Slip N Slide at the end.

Some of the obstacles made the more apprehensive kids hesitate, but all in all they had a great time. In fact, the kids continued to go through the course multiple times after getting their medals.

Our most noteworthy decoration was a rope we hung near the food that held all our medals we earned. It was great watching people as they looked over all of them.  They were a great conversation piece and got a lot of people talking.

The OCR cake complete with Kiss The Mud, Berlin Walls, Tarzan Swing & Funky Monkey obstacles.

The other great part of the party was the cake her grandparents created for her.  They did some research and created an obstacle race themed cake from scratch.  They did a great job and got lots of rave reviews!

All in all it was a lot of work, but we were able to create a memorable birthday party for our daughter. And nothing is better than hearing your kid exclaim to her friends, “This is the best birthday party ever!”

She was very proud to earn her Tough Mudder headband after completing her Birthday Obstacle Course Race!
