Why Obstacle Races Are So Popular

tough-muddre_fe

This was a great article that I wanted to share from Outside Magazine.  The article tried to explain why obstacle racing is so popular amount young Americans.  I would beg to differ.  I this that obstacle racing has cross paths with almost all age groups from the youngest racers who participate in kids races and the young at heart who are about to start collecting their Social Security.  I don’t think this is just a young man’s sport.  This has become something that every age group can enjoy.

How to Prepare for an Obstacle Race

ToughMudderBlog

I found this article and thought it was worthy to report here.  This was originally posted on Livestrong and written by Pete Williams.  This nicely recaps everything we have been saying on our show. You can find the full article here.

In the world of endurance sports, 2012 was the year of the obstacle race, with more than 2 million people competing in some sort of muddy challenge run.

Last year nearly 500,000 people completed a Tough Mudder, the 12-mile slog through strength challenges and Fear Factor-style obstacles, and just as many went through the shorter (5K) Warrior Dash. More than 350,000 competed in one of three versions of Spartan Race, ranging from 3 to 15 miles and requiring athletes to perform 30-burpee penalties each time they fail an obstacle, as well as navigate a gauntlet of mallet-wielding Spartan warriors to reach the finish line.

Malibu Spartan Sprint Review

         spartan-sprint10

The last of the Spartan Sprint races in Southern California for 2012 were held in the Santa Monica Mountains at Calamigos Ranch December 1st and 2nd.  The Spartan Sprint is the shortest of the Spartan Races, which does not always mean the easiest of races.  This race would prove to be one of those cases. Spartan Race made a huge announcement today – Reebok will be their title sponsor of Spartan Races in a multi-year deal. This will open up so many more avenues for Spartan to take their brand further than they have before. Joe De Sena, Founder of Spartan, says it will help them continue to expand globally as well as help make obstacle racing an Olympic sport. You would think that this would had obstacle racers doing flips at the thought of bringing their beloved sport into the mainstream.

So why are Spartan die hards so upset?

For a long time I have struggled to figure out the secret behind the loyal following of Spartan. This is something that I haven’t seen in any other racing series. Their fans will tell you Spartan is the only way to go in obstacle racing and that every other race pales in comparison. It usually includes some colorful words to go along with that sentiment. In an industry that is growing faster than mold on bread, what makes Spartan so special?

Today I think I finally understand. [Read more…]

5 by 5th Virtual Run Series – January Check In

As 2013 rolls around many of us start to think about what goals or resolutions we should set for the new year.  As I mentioned before I decided to take part in the 5 by 5th Virtual Run Series.  This was set up to help people get moving and move towards a more active lifestyle.

As I woke up on New Year’s Day I knew I wanted to log my miles on this first day of the new year. Daniel and I decided to go out to Placerita Canyon, which is a short distance from our house and an area full of great trails.  The trail we chose to do was a 4 mile out and back trail with a couple inclines along the way.

I brought my camera along because I love all the beauty that can be seen while hiking in the canyon.  This area in particular dramatically changes with the seasons and becomes very green with just a little rain.

Oak groves line the paths at Placerita Canyon.

5 by 5th Virtual Run Series

I never would have thought having a doctor telling me not to run for 12 weeks would be heartbreaking.  This is definitely something new for me.  A few years ago, if my doctor would have told me to stop exercising I would have considered that doctor’s strict orders to lay on the couch and put myself quickly into a junk food coma.  Wow, how things have changed.

Couch Potato

I now find myself perched on top of a slippery slope that I don’t want to fall down from.  I am very aware of how my body is reacting to this less active lifestyle I have been forced to accept (for the time being).  I have had to temporarily give up my long trail runs, weight lifting and boot camp.  This time of year it is especially hard.  Even more so since I have just perfected the most sinfully delicious chocolate chip cookie recipe that would rival anyone on Food Network or the Cooking Channel. Acknowledging The Pain In My….

About six months ago I was just getting into the groove of running. I was slowing building up my endurance and increasing my speed. I went out early one morning and decided to do a 3 mile run around my neighborhood. It was going to be relatively easy terrain mostly on the sidewalks with a gradual hill in between. I took the uphill area slow and made it up without walking.

Coming back around I was feeling really good about my pace and decided to pick up the speed. I did this as I was coming to the downhill part of the street. I starting going really fast down the hill and felt the sting of the pounding sidewalk under my feet. After about 40 feet I started to feel a shooting pain in my back. [Read more…]
